Pysanky Egg Workshop
April 25 @ 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

Registration Required. The art of egg decorating is a cultural tradition that has existed for thousands of years in Ukraine and throughout much of Eastern Europe. The egg itself is a symbol of rebirth that has retained its meaning through the pagan rites of springtime up to the modern, resurrectional celebrations of the Christian Church. Beyond just its beautiful artistry, a Ukrainian pysanka egg represents a story, a blessing, a prayer full of colorful symbolism that’s entwined with the love and dedication of its maker.
The Kopernik Society of Broome County, which owns and operates the Kopernik Observatory & Science Center, also promotes and celebrates Polish Culture. With the latter in mind, the Kopernik Society of Broome County is offering a Pysanky Egg decorating workshop on Saturday, April 25, starting at 9 am at the Kopernik Observatory & Science Center, 698 Underwood Rd. Vestal, NY
This workshop, led by local Pysanky Egg Artist Joseph Zapach, will provide a full description of the necessary tools and techniques, as well as an introduction to the history and symbolism of the traditional colors and designs. Participants will then have the opportunity to create an egg of their own using the provided materials. All skill levels are welcome; beginner, intermediate, and advanced designs and techniques will be available.
The cost of the workshop is $30 per person, and it is limited to 20 registrants.
