SUMMARY:Artemis II Lunar Flyby Watch Party
DESCRIPTION:Join us in-person at Kopernik Observatory starting at 6PM to watch the Artemis II Lunar Flyby! Today\, April 6\, astronauts aboard Artemis II return humanity to the Moon for a lunar flyby—the first mission of its kind since 1972. During this flyby\, boundaries will be pushed\, records will be set\, and a new generation of space exploration begins. Watch the lunar flyby in Kopernik Observatory’s Space Science Lab. Learn how to track Artemis II and other missions to space using NASA resources in our Computer Lab. We are also anticipating partly cloudy skies this evening and if that holds\, the observatory will also be open for telescope viewing. Don’t miss this historic event! \n\n\n\nFood will not be provided\, however\, we welcome you to bring your own packaged snacks and bottled drinks (candy\, chips\, soda\, etc.).

SUMMARY:Deepfakes\, AI\, and the Future of Trust: How Can We Tell What’s Real?
DESCRIPTION:Artificial intelligence (AI) can now create realistic images\, videos\, and voices that look and sound real\, but that doesn’t mean everything online is fake. In this talk\, we’ll explore how deepfakes work\, why some fake content is easy to spot while other examples are much harder\, and what today’s detection tools can and cannot do. Through real-world examples and simple demonstrations\, we’ll discuss how scientists are working to connect digital media back to the physical world to help restore trust. The goal is not fear\, but understanding\, so audiences of all ages can better navigate an AI-powered world.

SUMMARY:Brain Day
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, April 11\, from 1 pm to 4 pm\, Kopernik is teaming up with Binghamton University to host a special Brain Day event. You can come up with your child or grandchild to engage in several brain-related activities\, and they can learn more about the most complex part of the human body\, which happens to be located between the ears. There will be six different activities:– YOUR BRAIN AT WORK!– WHOSE BRAIN IS IT ANYWAY?– MAKE A NEURON– HOW DO NEURONS TALK TO EACH OTHER?– ASK SCIENTISTS– HOW DO WE HEAR THE SOUNDS?

SUMMARY:How Drones in the Air are Making the World Safer and Healthier
DESCRIPTION:Drones are becoming an indispensable tool for a wide range of applications. In his talk\, Dr. Nikulin will show how innovation in remote sensing and artificial intelligence creates adaptable tools that support humanitarian efforts to detect and characterize buried explosive hazards more safely and efficiently\, as well as support environmental remediation by locating orphaned and undocumented oil and gas wells with the goal of reducing methane emissions and protecting groundwater resources.

SUMMARY:Pysanky Egg Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Registration Required. The art of egg decorating is a cultural tradition that has existed for thousands of years in Ukraine and throughout much of Eastern Europe. The egg itself is a symbol of rebirth that has retained its meaning through the pagan rites of springtime up to the modern\, resurrectional celebrations of the Christian Church. Beyond just its beautiful artistry\, a Ukrainian pysanka egg represents a story\, a blessing\, a prayer full of colorful symbolism that’s entwined with the love and dedication of its maker. \n\n\n\nThe Kopernik Society of Broome County\, which owns and operates the Kopernik Observatory & Science Center\, also promotes and celebrates Polish Culture. With the latter in mind\, the Kopernik Society of Broome County is offering a Pysanky Egg decorating workshop on Saturday\, April 25\, starting at 9 am at the Kopernik Observatory & Science Center\, 698 Underwood Rd. Vestal\, NY \n\n\n\nThis workshop\, led by local Pysanky Egg Artist Joseph Zapach\, will provide a full description of the necessary tools and techniques\, as well as an introduction to the history and symbolism of the traditional colors and designs. Participants will then have the opportunity to create an egg of their own using the provided materials. All skill levels are welcome; beginner\, intermediate\, and advanced designs and techniques will be available. \n\n\n\nThe cost of the workshop is $30 per person\, and it is limited to 20 registrants.
