For the 25th summer, the Kopernik Observatory & Science Center in Vestal, NY is offering week-long camps for students in grades 1-12. Sponsored by the Link Foundation, in memory of inventor/explorer Edwin A. Link, the Link Summer STEM Exploration camps offer hands-on, high-tech adventures in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) in a fun and nurturing environment. Camps typically run Monday to Friday from 9 a.m.to 3 p.m. Early drop-off and late pick-up options are available. Solar Eclipse Workshop (Astronomy, grades 6-8)
July 24 & 25
This two-day workshop will have students learning about the sun and the upcoming solar eclipse. Participants will learn how to safely observe the sun and will build their own special solar telescope. Course Outline
Gadgets, Widgets, & Gizmos (Engineering, gr. 6-8)
During this camp, students will learn about basic electronics and circuit design and will create a variety of electrical and electronic devices. Topics covered will include Ohm’s Law, series/parallel circuits, and electrical and electronics safety. Tuition includes $20 materials fee. Course Outline
Robotic Missions to Alien Worlds
(Space Science, grades 6-8)
July 17 – July 21
Students attending this camp will learn about the design and operation of robotic vehicles to explore the solar system. Special emphasis will be on the Mars Science Lab and the Curiosity Rover currently exploring Mars and the Cassini mission to Saturn. Course Outline
Return to the Edge of Space (STEM, grades 8-12)
August 14 – 18
In August 2016, Kopernik students designed, built, launched, and recovered a weather balloon that reached an altitude of over 105,000 feet (20 miles). This summer, students will have the opportunity to build on the experience of last year’s campers and add new experiments, including the use of on-board microcomputers.
The World of Computer Science (grades 9-12)
July 31 – Aug 4
Students will learn about both software and hardware in a computer system. In addition to learning about algorithms and writing programs, they will also learn how the hardware modules that gets the job done. Students will use C++ to program an Arduino microprocessor. Course Outline
